Wolves In The Throne Room: Black cascade
07/04/09 || Euthanatos
Remember when “Two hunters” came out and everyone was riding these guys’ nutsacks, apart from Seker who tore them a new asshole? Well, I have to say I kind of agree with him. I never really understood what all the fuss was about concerning Wolves In The Throne Room, and I confess that “Black cascade” is not doing much to change that, although I do find it a bit more interesting than the previous album, which pretty much passed me by without the slightest interest on my part.
The overall atmosphere is undeniably black metal, but Wolves In The Throne Room do have an extra appeal in their slower passages, with a great sense of melody and grief permeating their songwriting. But while they do have their good moments, four tracks that are over 10 minutes long need a lot of focus, I mean, you really need to be into this to not find it boring most of the time. And since our society is riddled with ADD retards, this will not be something most will be giving half a chance.
The irony is, of course, that if you do give it the chance, “Black cascade” has a lot of deep, haunting moments, especially on the first track, “Wanderer above the sea of fog”. The other songs have good passages too, but I felt many of those were filler, not really going anywhere or portraying any meaningful feelings in them.
While not a complete pile of shit or mind blowing, in this day and age of mp3 files, it’s worth checking out because Wolves In The Throne Room do have things going for them. They just haven’t revolutionized black metal music yet.
The cover: Now this is a fucking album cover! A creepy night spirit haunts the fucking blackness. Metal. Pure metal.
5 stuffed wolves in the trophy room out of 10.
